Ice Fishing Terms
Ice Shanty- A small enclosed hut usually made of wood or a tarp like product....Helps keep the snow and wind off you.... Sled- A small boat like sled to pull your ice fishing supplies... Tip-Ups- Small devices you hook up to a fishing line...When a fish is on you line the tip-up will pop up and raise a flag for you to see...These help you fish many different holes at one time... Necklace Ice Picks- These are pretty much what they say they are....The ice pick point in inclosed in a case and it hangs around your neck....If you do happen to fall in the lake, you can use the picks to help pull yourself out of the ice... Shoe Spikes/Springs--A elastic fitting that goes around your shoe...It has spikes on the bottom to help give you traction while walking on the ice... |
Ice Auger- A drill for you to put a hole in the ice...These can be hand cranked or motor powered...A hole you drill should be in the area of 8 to 12 inches... Ice Chisel- A small chisel to help you with the hole you have drilled... Ice Skimmer- A skimmer you use to keep the slush and ice out of your fishing hole... Compass- Why a compass??? You never know when you could get caught in a snow or even just a wind storm when you are out, even on the smallest of lakes...You can easily lose your sense of direction... |
General Information
** When walking with a fishing partner on ice you are not sure about, it is best to stay about 6 feet away from each other and remember to always carry your necklace ice picks...
** Be carefull crossing ice near river mouths, bridges, islands...These usually have currents which will make the ice thinner...
** Heated shanties need good ventalation...The heaters most people use produce a deadly carbon monoxide gas that can poison and kill you...
** Always carry a safety line that can be thrown to you if you fall threw the ice...
